In a move that has electrified both gaming and Hollywood, Paramount Pictures, now operating under the Skydance banner, and Activision Blizzard (owned by Microsoft) have officially confirmed a partnership to produce a live-action feature film based on the blockbuster video game franchise Call of Duty.
Paramount will take charge of developing, producing, and distributing the film, with Activision participating as a creative partner to ensure that the adaptation stays true to the franchise’s high-octane action and narrative style.
David Ellison, Chairman and CEO of Paramount and a lifelong Call of Duty fan, called the project “a dream come true.” He emphasized that the film would be crafted with the same disciplined, uncompromising standards that shaped Top Gun: Maverick.
Rob Kostich, President of Activision, promised the film would deliver "visceral, breathtaking action" while honoring and expanding upon the qualities that made the franchise a global phenomenon.
The Call of Duty franchise remains one of the all-time best-selling video game series—boasting over 500 million copies sold worldwide and maintaining the title of #1 best-selling U.S. video game franchise for 16 consecutive years.
While the deal marks a significant push for video game-to-film adaptations, the project remains in its very early stages. As of now, no script, story direction, cast, director, or release date has been announced. Industry speculation suggests that the film may draw inspiration from hit sub-series like Modern Warfare or Black Ops, with potential for a broader cinematic universe, possibly including sequels or TV spin-offs, depending on its success.
